Alabama Authors
Most people think of the Crimson Tide or Paul "Bear" Bryant when they think of Alabama. However, AL had much more than a football team at the Capstone. Alabama is also the birthplace of numerous authors. or many authors have ties to AL. The Alabama Public Library Service has an extensive list. Imagine my surprise when there were over 1,000 pages of authors with ties to AL. If you would like to take a look for yourself, here is the website:http://www.apls.state.al.us/webpages/pubs/ALAuthors.pdf Their list seems to be based on living in Alabama five years or more.
More well known authors from AL are Fannie Flagg, Marc Childress, and Winston Groom. These authors may be more well known to you for their books that were adapted into movies. Fannie Flagg for Fried Green Tomatoes and Marc Childress for Crazy in Alabama. Winston Groom is the author behind the blockbuster hit Forrest Gump. There are many more authors that live in or were born in AL. Come to our SSCC libraries and find out more about Alabama, books, and authors!

Louise Lewis Library
Many people are shocked to discover that there are two Shelton State campuses.... and that they both house libraries. The Fredd campus is located on Martin Luther King Blvd. The Fredd campus hold the Louise Lewis Library. The library is located in the main building. The library was named in honor of Mrs. Lewis in 2006.
Established in 1994 as a branch library, the Lewis Library was formally named in honor of Mrs. Louise Boyd Lewis during the fortieth anniversary celebration and dedication of the newly renovated administration building on the Fredd campus on May 4, 2006. Mrs. Lewis served in many capacities at C.A. Fredd State Technical College from 1971 through 2000, including Title III Director of the C.A. Fredd Campus from 1987 through 2000. In 1997, she was also named Assistant Director of the C.A. Fredd Campus. (Excerpt from Lewis Library fact sheet by DR. Debbie Grimes)
The Lewis library houses over 2,000 books. Because of the technical programs housed on the Fredd campus, a lot of the books are aimed at those degree programs. You'll finds books on culinary arts, automotive technology, and graphic arts. This is not to say we don't have other books of various interests. We're sure we can find something you would enjoy reading or find information you may want or need. Don't forget, we also have best sellers! We also have computers for student use with internet access.
Most, if not all, services that we have in the Brooks-Cork library can be found at the Lewis library. Ms. Lancaster and Mrs. Mack are there to help meet you needs. So.... Come and check us out!!!

Del.icio.us or Delicious!
We all have favorite sites that we use on a regular basis when it comes to using the internet. More than likely we have several sites that are bookmarked as favorites. What happens when you're away from your computer and can't remember the website? Del.icio.us can help! No, del.icio.us is not a lady of the evening. Del.icio.us is a social boookmarking tool. It allows you to access your bookmarks from any computer. You can bookmark things for yourself and friends. You can also see what other people have bookmarked.
In the past this bookmarking tool has been written as del.icio.us, however, this September it was supposedly changed to "delicious". Upon researching this topic, I still found it under del.icio.us. Go to this website and read all about it:http://del.icio.us/

Banned Books Week 9/29/07-10/6/07
The American Library Association (ALA) is celebrating the 26th anniversary of Banned Books Week. This week celebrates banned, as well as, challenged books. Banned books have been removed an unavailable to read, at some point in time. Challenged books weren't removed, however, an attempt to remove the material has been made. Banning or challenging may be due to sexual content, inappropriateness for age group, or offensive language -to name a few.
For more information on banned and challenged books go to ALA's website:http://www.ala.org/ala/oif/bannedbooksweek/bannedbooksweek.htm#booksandauthors
You will find lists such as the 100 Most Challenged Books or the top ten books for certain years. You may be surprised to find you've read several of the books listed or seen the movie based on the book. I was certainly surprised to see several of favorite books I've read listed.

Wikis
You may be wondering about the signs in the library that have leis on them. The leis are there to advertise that we have a SheltonLibWiki. If you are on the library's homepage you can click on the link. But wait...... What is a wiki? A wiki is a quick and collaborative way to search for information and edit webpages. Wikis can be edited by all of its users. The most well known is Wikipedia. Tell us about your wiki experience!
Remember, this is not just about your wiki experience. Tell us about any experience you have while at Shelton. We want to hear it all, good and bad! Hopefully, we'll hear more good than bad.
