With classes starting this past Monday, I'm sure your week has been eventful. I think everyone gets a little nervous the first day of classes. There are several things everyone has to deal with. Things such as fighting the traffic and getting here on time, finding classrooms and wondering what your instructors will be like. Then there are some that also have to deal with drop/add or trying to find classes that fit their schedules. We also have students that need a certain class but find that the class has been closed. This all part of the life of being a student.

We hope that you find friendly and courteous staff in ALL departments to help you with your needs. That being said, when you're having a difficult time and need to speak with someone try to keep calm even though the situation may be stressful. I know that can be easier said than done but being patient, friendly and having a smile on your face can go a long way. Faculty/staff/student interaction is also much easier if all parties involved remain cool and levelheaded.

Smile, be courteous and by all means ask for help when needed!

In Order To Serve You Better

SSCC will be closed on August 18, 2010. This is a day for a campuswide professional development day. This day will allow ALL employees of the college to learn information that will help us serve students better. While we realize this may be an inconvenience to you for this one day, we hope to learn things that will help you everyday. This is a day when the President of SSCC, Dr. Heinrich, will share information with all employees. It will also give us a chance to interact with people in other departments and learn from one another. That way the different departments can be more cohesive for our student population.

DIY In The Library

Working in the library I often hear the question, Do you have this book? While any library employee is happy to assist you, did you know you can find a book yourself? If you go to any library computer you can search the library's catalog.

How do I do this you may ask? It's simple! Click on either the internet icon or the Shelton State Libraries icon. Next, click where it says Currrent Students. A dropdown box will appear, click Library. You will then see the libraries homepage.

On the library homepage you'll find lots of useful information. You can search for books that are housed on both campuses. Remember, you can request a book from Fredd be sent to the Martin campus, if needed, and vice versa. There is also information regarding the Alabama Virtual Library (AVL),reference help, and other online info that may be beneficial to your studies.

Again, we are always happy to help but DIY is available as well! In the meantime, happy searching.

SAVE! SAVE! SAVE!

It's happened to almost all of us. You're happily typing your paper on the computer then the power goes out. You've lost 8 pages of the 10 page paper you just wrote. You begin to rant and rave and try not to put a fist through the monitor. The only answer to the problem is to save as you go.

Save! Save! Save! Save at least every 10 minutes or so. I would recommend always having a jump drive with you when using the computers here in the library. If you lose you paper there is NOTHING we can do to help you that is why we're offering this advice. There is no way for us to retrieve what you've previousy typed.

There are several things that may occur that no one has control over that may turn your computer off. First, with this being the summer the weather is unpredictable. We never know when a surprise storm will pop up and knock the power off. Second, and this has happened before, you never know when a bird may fly into a transformer, cause it to blow and off goes the power. Third, computers can sometimes just be downright unpredictable. One young man was typing a paper and his computer just shut itself off. It was the only computer in the library to turn off and he'd not saved any of his work.

So again, I recommend you bring a jumpdrive and save your work every 10 minuts or so. Also, please remember to take your jump drive with you when you leave.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://myssccexperience.blogspot.com/2010/07/save-save-save.html' title='SAVE! While you may be in your classroom enjoying the AC, at some point and time you must go outside and enter into the heat. Here are a few tips for how to beat the heat this summer:

1. Come check out our best sellers in both campus libraries. You can enjoy them in the comfort and cool of the library or take it with you and enjoy it poolside.

2. Drink plenty of fluids but especially water. Drinking plenty of fluids will help prevent dehydration, heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

3. Wear light colored clothing.

4. Carry an umbrella. An umbrella can provide protection rain or shine. It does double duty as a shield from the sun's rays and the rain. We all know the rain can come at any minute.

5.Stay in the shade, as much as possible, if you must be outdoors.

We hope these few tips will help you beat the heat. Of course, you can always come in the library and check out books pertaining to weather, health and prevention of heat related problems.

"BIG" Things Coming

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 310px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_yJPhhSDJarA/S_FmLzyKa9I/AAAAAAAAAAM/2GdDtvzPIII/s320/Tom+Sawyer+Logo.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472267375297063890" />
The Shelton State Libraries are already planning for the fall semester. The campus was either closing or had closed. The official Friday hours for both campuses is 8 a.m. -12 p.m. This isn't just the library but ALL offices on campus. To make up for this change there are longer hours during the week. Official office hours Monday-Thursday are 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m.

Please make note of the changes and plan accordingly. If you have a paper to type or test to take please come in by 11:00. Also, it would be wise to start saving your documents around 11:45. This way you can ensure you don't lose your work while making a mad scramble to be out by 12.

Things You Should Know

The library hours on both campuses are changing. The Brooks-Cork Library (Martin campus) will be open from 7:30 a.m.- 10p.m. Monday through Thursday. On Friday hours are 8 a.m.- 12 noon. The Lewis library (Fredd campus) is open 7:30 a.m.- 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m.-12 noon on Friday.

We understand that your instructors place thing on Blackboard or Powerpoint for you to print. Please refrain from printing large documents in the library. We have to make all our paper ans ink cartridges last until October. If they don't last that long there may be a possibility that we will not be able to furnish paper to you. It really helps when printing Powerpoint slides if you print them six to a page in grey scale. If you help us we can serve you much better.

Also, take advantages of the workshops being held on Fredd's campus this summer. These workshops include use of the AVL (Alabama Virtual Library) card, how to use search engines, and various other computer training classes. Mr. Don Bell, night librarian, had made changes beneficial to students. Now, we have an art gallery and a new comfortable sitting are.The are features the artwork of Larry "Poncho" Brown this month. He's a comtemporary African aAmerican artist. There are also pamphlets avialable in the sitting are to give you more information on him.

Another change is the way in which study tables are arranged. No longer set up banquet style it has allowed for more table groupings. The way tables are grouped now, there are outlets in which to plug up your electronices devices. This is great for those of you bringing in your laptops. It also features a display with National Geographic magazines which is in keeping with our "Bringing You the World" theme. Check out the airplane that's haning from the ceiling also!

If you see Mr. Bell, please thank him for his efforts and hard work. He came in on his off days to make the library more user friendly. We hope you'll be pleased withthe changes.

Computer Use

We're at the point where students and teachers have really started to settle into the semester. That usually means that papers are due and you need to use a computer. A lot of times ALL the computers in the library are in use. There are other places on campus that have computers for student use. These places include the learning center, student center and open classrooms in the OAD (office administration) wing. The open classrooms are on the second floor on the back hallway and can be used if there is no class present.

If you are typing a paper, I recommend buying a portable USB drive. This will allow you to save your work if the printers are down.

Also, if you are printing out PowerPoint slides be sure to print multiple slides on a single sheet of paper. This will help us conserve paper and ink.

2 Important Days

Wow, 2009 is flying by! Can you believe it's already the middle of January?! Next week, our country will celebrate two historic figures. On Monday, a lot of people will be rejoicing a day to sleep in others will celebrate the birth of Martin Luther King, Jr. Many cities will be doing a day of service in honor of his memory. Others may attend a unity breakfast and I'm sure many schools will do plays.

Tuesday, is Inauguration Day and Barack Obama will be sworn in as the 44th President of the United States. Many televisions will be tuned to this this momentous event. Others will travel in person to witness this changing of the guard.

The works of Martin Luther King and countless others involved in the Civil Rights Movement helped bring Tuesday into fruition. A day many people thought they would never see intheir lifetime. While many know Martin Luther King's name, there were countless men and women of all sizes, shapes and colors that worked tirelessly in the fight. Many even lost their lives.

If you want to learn more about the Civil Rights Movemnet, Martin Luther King, Jr. or Barack Obama please stop by the SSCC libraries.

Preparation for Graduation

It's December and a lot of students will graduate this month. Unfortunately, there may be a few who think they will graduate but won't. Not graduating may be attributed to factors that may include owing the school money, not earning enough credits or failure of a class, etc. To help avoid situations like this do a self assessment on yourself.

A self assessment includes many things related to your education. First, make sure you have a copy of the SSCC Student Catalog and Handbook for the semester that you started school. This will tell you the requirements and number of hours required for your particular degree. Refer back to this when choosing your classes. Second, visit the Counseling for more help. Third, periodically check your transcript to make sure all the classes you have taken and paid for have are listed. Fourth, go by the business office to see if you have may have any outstanding balances. Fifth, make copies of EVERYTHING for yourself.

PLEASE, do your self assessment before the semester you think you are going to graduate. Just yesterday, I did my second graduation clearance for a young man that thought his tuition had been paid - it wasn't. I also did a clearance for a student who had to come back to school because the school had no record of a degree she already earned. She did a double major and luckily she had the copy of one of the diplomas although the school had no record of it. Unfortunately, she never received the second diploma and there was no record of that either. Don't let either of these situations be you.

Remember, during the semester in which you plan to graduate apply for graduation and get your clearance form signed by the appropriate offices!

Holiday Photos

The upcoming holiday season is often the best time for many photo opportunities. It's a time where many family members are usually together. Many photos can be taken, just don't take too many before dinner - people are HUNGRY! And everyone hates a bad photo. SSCC libraries can help!

We have several books on the Martin campus to help you take better photos. Most people have a digital or 35 mm camera. We have books on both types of cameras. If you want to learn how to create a perfect photo, photograph children or scan pics, check out the display cases.

If you simply like looking at photos, we have several atlases of photos. I may not be able to take the best pictures but I admire anyone else who can. Looking at others may give you an idea of a background or a pose.Learn about still or motion photography right here at SSCC.

The Voter's Have Decided

The 44th President of the United States of America was elected last night. Barack Obama is now the President-elect. The is a historic event for the entire nation because he is the first African American president. I believe it was also historic in the number of people that turned out to vote. Many people, although they have been eligible to register to vote in the past, didn't vote in past elections. The number of first time voters was quite surprising.

If you would like to learn more about the inauguration, voting process, electoral college,Mr. Obama or Senator McCain, please come by the library. It is our way of thanking the students for coming into the library. It also brings in students that have not been in the library, previously.Because the Fredd campus houses our technical programs, a lot of students are not aware of the books and materials that may help them in their programs of study. Instructors may also request book and/or audiovisual material that would benefit their students.

This year the book that students will receive is From the Heart:Seven Rules To Live By written by ABC anchorwoman Robin Roberts. In the state of Alabama you can register up to October 24, 2008 to be eligible to vote in the upcoming Presidential election. You may register to vote if you meet the following basic criteria:
Be 18 years or older
Be a U.S. citizen
Be a citizen of the city and county and which you register

There are a few more criteria that may make you ineligible to vote. Those have to do with felony convictions (if your rights haven't been restored) and mental capacity. You can read more about those on your voter registration form.

Here are a few websites that may help you register or learn more about the candidates:

http://www.sheltonstate.edu/content2.aspx?PageID=482

http://www.declareyourself.com/voting_faq/state_by_state_info_2.html

http://www.rockthevote.org/

http://www.sos.state.al.us/Elections/GetRegForm.aspx

Banned Book Week

Banned Books Week is celebrated the last week in September. It has been celebrated since 1982. This year it will be celebrated September 28- October 4. We are not actually banning books in the SSCC libraries. We are celebrating the freedom to read books that have been "banned" or "challenged". Books that have been banned means that the material was removed at one point and time. A challenged book means that someone or group tried to have the materials removed.

Why are books banned or challenged?
There are many different reason books have been banned. Books can be "banned" for these reasons and more: anti-family, nudity, offensive language, and unsuited to age group.

Why are we allowed to read banned/challenged books?
The 1st Amendment to the Constitution protects the freedom of expression. This is freedom of speech, press and assembly. Through freedom of press, people can express themselves freely through publication.

What are some books that have been banned?
The Bible
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
The Lorax by Dr. Seuss
Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder

There are many other books that have been placed on the banned list. You may be surprised to find books that you've read on the list. For a complete list go to:

http://staging.ala.org/ala/aboutala/offices/oif/archive/bannedbooksweek73008archive.cfm

Come into the SSCC libraries and celebrate your freedom to read. NLW is a celebration of libraries contributions to society. It has been observed nationwide since 1958.

Shelton State Libraries celebrated by doing a Read A Book campaign. Each student that checked out a library book had the opportunity to place their name in a drawing for a prize. Prizes included free food from Chick-Fil-A, a gift card from Wal-Mart, and a desk lamp from Office Depot.

As we celebrated NLW, we continued to conduct our surveys. Several students have wanted to know if we really look at the results from the surveys. The answer is yes. Your responses allow us to see how we can serve you better as well as the areas we're doing well in. Your surveys, responses and comments are valuable to us.

It's Survey Time!

It's spring and that means survey time for the SSCC libraries. February is also the month we celebrate Black History or African American History Month. It's not just the history of those descended from Africa,it's everyone's history.!

When was it started and why February?

Black History Month was started by Dr. Carter G. woodson in 1926. It actually started as Negro History Week and was held the second week in February. Later it was expanded to a month. The month of February was designated because both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass were born in this month.

The first library for African Americans opened in 1905 in Louisville, Kentucky. The entire staff was african american. In 1908 it became endowed by Carnegie. The head librarian was the Rev. Thomas Fountain Blue. Many take for granted the fact they are able to read. Unfortunately, for many Americans, illiteracy is a problem. There are many adults that are not able to read at a functional level. There are many reasons people are not able to read. Some of those reasons include, but are not limited to, unable to finish education, learning disability, or english is a second language. If you know someone who has difficulty reading, many communities provide reading instruction/GED programs for adults.

Adult education is housed on the Fredd campus. Adult education students are entitled to a Readers Club card. The Readers Club card entitles GED students to check out books, paperbacks, vertical file materials, and pamphlets. We invite all adult education students to participate in this free service. SSCC libraries strives to help all students in their academic endeavors. If you would like to take a look for yourself, here is the website:http://www.apls.state.al.us/webpages/pubs/ALAuthors.pdf Their list seems to be based on living in Alabama five years or more.

More well known authors from AL are Fannie Flagg, Marc Childress, and Winston Groom. These authors may be more well known to you for their books that were adapted into movies. Fannie Flagg for Fried Green Tomatoes and Marc Childress for Crazy in Alabama. Winston Groom is the author behind the blockbuster hit Forrest Gump. There are many more authors that live in or were born in AL. Come to our SSCC libraries and find out more about Alabama, books, and authors!

Louise Lewis Library

Many people are shocked to discover that there are two Shelton State campuses.... and that they both house libraries. The Fredd campus is located on Martin Luther King Blvd. The Fredd campus hold the Louise Lewis Library. The library is located in the main building. The library was named in honor of Mrs. Lewis in 2006.

Established in 1994 as a branch library, the Lewis Library was formally named in honor of Mrs. Louise Boyd Lewis during the fortieth anniversary celebration and dedication of the newly renovated administration building on the Fredd campus on May 4, 2006. Mrs. Lewis served in many capacities at C.A. Fredd State Technical College from 1971 through 2000, including Title III Director of the C.A. Fredd Campus from 1987 through 2000. In 1997, she was also named Assistant Director of the C.A. Fredd Campus. (Excerpt from Lewis Library fact sheet by DR. Debbie Grimes)

The Lewis library houses over 2,000 books. Because of the technical programs housed on the Fredd campus, a lot of the books are aimed at those degree programs. You'll finds books on culinary arts, automotive technology, and graphic arts. This is not to say we don't have other books of various interests. We're sure we can find something you would enjoy reading or find information you may want or need. Don't forget, we also have best sellers! We also have computers for student use with internet access.

Most, if not all, services that we have in the Brooks-Cork library can be found at the Lewis library. More than likely we have several sites that are bookmarked as favorites. What happens when you're away from your computer and can't remember the website? Del.icio.us can help! No, del.icio.us is not a lady of the evening. Del.icio.us is a social boookmarking tool. It allows you to access your bookmarks from any computer. You can bookmark things for yourself and friends. You can also see what other people have bookmarked.

In the past this bookmarking tool has been written as del.icio.us, however, this September it was supposedly changed to "delicious". Upon researching this topic, I still found it under del.icio.us. Go to this website and read all about it:http://del.icio.us/

Banned Books Week 9/29/07-10/6/07

The American Library Association (ALA) is celebrating the 26th anniversary of Banned Books Week. This week celebrates banned, as well as, challenged books. Banned books have been removed an unavailable to read, at some point in time. Challenged books weren't removed, however, an attempt to remove the material has been made. Banning or challenging may be due to sexual content, inappropriateness for age group, or offensive language -to name a few.

For more information on banned and challenged books go to ALA's website:http://www.ala.org/ala/oif/bannedbooksweek/bannedbooksweek.htm#booksandauthors
You will find lists such as the 100 Most Challenged Books or the top ten books for certain years. You may be surprised to find you've read several of the books listed or seen the movie based on the book. I was certainly surprised to see several of favorite books I've read listed.

Wikis

You may be wondering about the signs in the library that have leis on them.
